Bureau of Labor Statistics NAICS Classification

The Alliance is actively collaborating with the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) to consider/adopt the UPT to update their outdated NAICS classification system whose origins date back to the 1960s.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) stopped tracking the printing and related support activities industry in March 2019, including commercial printing, screen printing, and related support activities, because it deemed these industries to be “too small or too diverse” to warrant continued specific tracking. This decision means the BLS no longer provides detailed industry-specific data for these sectors.

The adoption of the UPT by the BLS would provide a much clearer picture of the full breadth and depth of the printing industry. Therefore, providing the industry with a more robust voice on Capital Hill and the ability to request support such as grants for workforce development. This would provide positive impact across the industry.
